Denmark Moves to Ban Social Media for Under-15s
Denmark’s government wants to ban children under 15 from using certain social media platforms. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced the proposal in parliament during the opening of the autumn session. She called social media and mobile phones tools that are robbing our children of their childhood.
FREDERIKSEN did not list which platforms the ban would cover. Also, the government hasn’t decided exactly how to enforce the rule. However, parents could give permission for their children to use social media from age 13.
Why Denmark is Taking Action
A government wellbeing commission found that 94% of Danish seventh graders had social media profiles before age 13. It also showed that many children spend hours per day on platforms like TikTok and YouTube. Frederiksen argued that this usage harms concentration, reading skills, and mental health.
Wider Context & International Echoes
Other countries are also discussing raising minimum age restrictions. France, Greece, and Australia are among them. Denmark is also pushing for stronger enforcement of age verification online. The proposal aims to protect young people from harmful content and excessive screen time.
