“Afghan Girls Denied Education: Fatima Amiri Urges Global Action at UN”

At just 17, Fatima Amiri survived a devastating suicide bombing at her classroom in Kabul in 2022 that killed more than 50 of her classmates. Despite losing an eye and suffering severe injuries, she has since become a determined advocate for Afghan girls’ right to education. Now living abroad, Amiri shares the voices of millions of Afghan girls whose schools remain closed under Taliban restrictions. “They are crying, they are sending me many messages and saying that we want the right [to] education,” she said, stressing that education was the only hope they had.According to UN Women, over 90% of Afghans support girls’ secondary education. Yet, more than 2.2 million girls are barred from classrooms, and nearly seven million children are currently out of school due to the ban and other barriers.Speaking at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Amiri called for urgent measures: “We need actions, support for underground schools, protections for those fighting for the right to learn.”She emphasized that international pledges have not translated into tangible change: “It has been four years… still schools are closed, universities are closed, still a woman cannot go outside alone. So, speaking is not enough; it’s time to do something.”Amiri urged world leaders to create opportunities, including scholarships and online learning platforms. She noted that many girls continue to study secretly, motivated to learn despite limited access to resources and poor internet. “Girls in Afghanistan are unstoppable. They’re trying more and more every day,” she said. Her story reflects resilience but also the urgency for global solidarity. For Afghan girls, education is not just a right—it is a lifeline for their future.
