AI Impact on Memory Raises Concerns Over Student Learning

A new study explores the AI impact on memory among students using tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Researchers found that these tools can boost short-term performance. However, they may weaken long-term learning and memory. As a result, experts now urge careful and balanced use of AI in education.

Impact of AI on Study Habits

The study, published in Social Sciences & Humanities Open, tested 120 university students. Researchers split them into two groups. One group used AI tools for studying, while the other relied on traditional methods.
Students who used AI scored an average of 57.5%. In contrast, those without AI scored 68.5%. Therefore, the results suggest that AI reduces the mental effort needed during learning.
Experts describe this pattern as cognitive offloading. This means students depend on tools instead of active thinking. As a result, they may not store information effectively in memory.

Risks and Smarter Use of AI

Researchers explain that effort improves learning. When students struggle, they understand and remember better. However, AI tools often provide instant answers. This ease can limit deep thinking and reduce retention.
At the same time, the study does not claim permanent damage to intelligence. Instead, it highlights the risks of overuse. Heavy reliance on AI can create dependency, similar to a cognitive crutch.
In addition, experts warn about changing study habits. Students may focus more on searching than remembering. Therefore, educators must guide AI use carefully.
The study recommends structured and limited use of AI tools. This approach can support learning while protecting critical thinking. Overall, balanced use can help students gain benefits without harming cognitive health.
