AJK JAAC Ban Enforced Ahead of Planned Protest and Elections
The AJK JAAC Ban has come into effect after the Azad Jammu and Kashmir government declared the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) a proscribed organization under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Authorities announced the decision ahead of the group’s planned protest call on June 9. Officials said the measure aims to maintain law and order and protect public life and property. As a result, security agencies have intensified monitoring across several areas of the region.
Following the ban, law enforcement agencies arrested around 35 to 40 individuals linked to the organization. Officials stated that the arrests formed part of efforts to uphold the writ of the state and prevent potential disruptions. Authorities also emphasized that maintaining peace remains their top priority.
Authorities Stress Public Safety and Stability
Government representatives said citizens have the constitutional right to engage in peaceful activities. However, they warned that authorities would not allow violence, vandalism, or actions that threaten public order. Security officials stressed that challenging state institutions under the guise of protest would face strict action.
In addition, authorities reassured residents that the overall situation remains stable. Markets, shopping centers, and commercial areas opened according to their normal schedules. Public transport services also continued to operate without interruption.
Officials reported that daily life remained unaffected in major urban centers, including Muzaffarabad. Therefore, they urged citizens to avoid spreading or believing unverified information. Authorities encouraged people to rely on official sources for updates regarding the situation.
Elections Remain the Focus
The development comes as Azad Jammu and Kashmir prepares for Legislative Assembly elections scheduled for July 27. Political observers and government officials have highlighted the importance of respecting democratic institutions during this period.
Authorities urged political groups and citizens to channel their concerns through the electoral process. Furthermore, they encouraged stakeholders to participate actively in democratic activities rather than street protests.
A senior administrative official said elections provide the most effective platform for addressing public concerns. According to the official, legislative forums offer opportunities to discuss reforms and policy matters. The government believes strong democratic participation will help strengthen institutions, promote stability, and support peaceful political engagement across Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
