Apple OpenAI Legal Fight Escalates Over Trade Secrets
The Apple OpenAI legal fight is growing as both companies trade serious accusations in court. The dispute centers on alleged trade secret misuse and employee recruitment. Apple claims OpenAI used former Apple employees to obtain confidential information about unreleased products. The company also alleges that OpenAI used this information while developing new consumer hardware.
From Partnership to Courtroom Battle
Apple and OpenAI once worked closely together. Their partnership began in June 2024, when Apple announced ChatGPT integration across its devices. However, tensions grew after OpenAI acquired io in May 2025. The startup came from former Apple designer Jony Ive and cost OpenAI $6.4 billion.
That deal signaled OpenAI’s growing interest in hardware. Meanwhile, Apple continued changing its AI strategy to compete in the fast-moving market. Apple sued OpenAI in July, accusing the company of trade secret theft. OpenAI denied the allegations and defended employees’ right to change jobs.
The Dispute Intensified In August
Apple requested a preliminary injunction against OpenAI while the case continues. OpenAI then asked a federal judge to dismiss Apple’s lawsuit. The company called Apple’s allegations unsupported and blamed the dispute on Apple’s struggles.
Apple later pushed for the case to enter discovery. That process could force both companies to reveal sensitive information.
Apple now also accuses OpenAI of destroying evidence. OpenAI strongly rejected the claim and said Apple created the dispute through poor procedures.
The case could expose confidential details about recruitment, product development, and AI hardware plans. It also highlights the growing competition between major technology companies.
A court hearing is scheduled for October 1. The judge’s decision could determine whether the legal battle moves into a deeper discovery phase.
