Children Lead Global Call for Free Preschool and Secondary Education
As a mother, watching my four-year-old son learn in preschool reminds me how vital these early years are. In France, education from age three is free and mandatory. Sadly, millions of children worldwide still lack this opportunity.
UNICEF and UNESCO estimate that nearly 370 million children of preschool or secondary-school age are not in school. Many families face high tuition or hidden costs that block access to learning.
Listening to Children’s Voices
This year, over 8,000 children from 40 countries joined a UN consultation on free education. Their message was clear: school is where they grow, make friends, and learn. They believe every child should study without worrying about money.
Global Push for a New UN Treaty
In September, countries met in Geneva to discuss creating a new protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This treaty would make free education from preschool through secondary school a global standard.
Children from Croatia, Indonesia, Liberia, Mexico, and the UK spoke directly to world leaders. Their plea was simple: education must be free, inclusive, and for all.
Growing MomentumSo far, 92 countries have engaged, with many supporting the initiative. Civil society groups, academics, and experts agree that binding laws are needed to ensure real change.
As young Karen from Mexico said: “Education is not a favor — it’s an investment in the future.”
The world is listening. Now, it’s time for governments to act.
