Electric Stoves Asthma Relief: Study Shows Better Breathing After Switching

Replacing Electric Stoves Asthma concerns with cleaner cooking methods may help many people breathe better. A recent study found that changing from gas to electric stoves reduced asthma symptoms for many participants. As a result, researchers believe cleaner indoor air can support better asthma control alongside regular medical care.

Cost remains the biggest challenge

Replacing a gas stove can be expensive, especially for older homes. In many newer U.S. homes, installation costs around $1,500. However, older properties often need electrical upgrades that increase the total cost.
Researchers spent about $7,000 per household during the study because many homes were built before 1960. Therefore, these expenses may prevent low-income families from making the switch. Even so, fewer emergency visits and hospital stays could lower healthcare costs over time. Governments and health insurers could help by offering financial support. In addition, subsidies may make cleaner cooking options more affordable for families living with poorly controlled asthma.

Global programs show encouraging results

Developing countries also face financial and infrastructure challenges. Poor electrical systems and unreliable power supplies can slow the transition. However, some countries have already shown promising results.
For example, Ecuador supported 750,000 households between 2015 and 2021 by helping them replace gas stoves with electric induction models. As a result, hospital admissions for respiratory illnesses declined during the program.

Patients should continue medical care

Switching to an electric stove is not a cure for asthma. People should keep taking prescribed medicines and avoid common triggers like cigarette smoke, dust, pollen, and viral infections. However, around 80% of study participants reported noticeable improvements after changing stoves.
Doctors can also discuss cooking methods with asthma patients and explain possible health risks. Likewise, builders, landlords, and restaurant owners may consider installing electric stoves to create healthier indoor environments for future residents and workers.
