Ferguson Pushes New Village Online Policy to Guide Employee Conduct
Fredonia Mayor Michael Ferguson wants to introduce a village online policy that guides how employees and officials use social media. He shared the idea during a recent workshop. The mayor also asked the Board of Trustees to offer feedback on the proposal.
Ferguson explained that the policy would apply to anyone who receives a paycheck from the community. He noted that it would not be a contractual clause. Instead, it would function as a standard rule once a person becomes an employee or an elected representative. This approach, he said, keeps expectations clear and fair.
The mayor expressed frustration with the tone of online discussions.
He believes social platforms often encourage harmful behavior. For example, he mentioned that social chatter can become slanderous. He added that social media now plays a major role in people’s lives; however, it does not always create respectful spaces.
Ferguson also said that anyone working for the community should follow certain standards. These standards include acting with respect and handling conflicts responsibly. In addition, he wants employees and officials to avoid using public platforms in ways that damage trust.
The mayor has already shared the draft
His village online policy with the community’s legal team. Attorneys at Webster Szanyi reviewed the document. They told him that the structure looks solid. As a result, Ferguson now wants board members to approve the policy soon.
He described the document as detailed. However, he chose not to discuss every section during the workshop. The board will take more time to read it. Once members agree on the final version, they can move forward with a formal vote. Ferguson hopes this step will support healthier communication across the community.
