Global Hum Study Suggests Rare Tinnitus May Be the Real Cause

Global Hum Study Suggests Rare Tinnitus May Be the Real Cause

For more than 50 years, people around the world have reported hearing a strange, low humming sound. However, most people nearby could not hear anything. A new Global Hum Study suggests the mysterious noise may come from inside the ear instead of the outside environment.

A Long-Standing Mystery

Scientists have debated the cause of the global hum for decades. The unusual sound is often described as a constant buzz, hum, or low roar. In the 1970s, many people in Bristol, England, first reported hearing it. Later, similar reports came from Australia, New Zealand, and North America.
Many people noticed the sound only in certain places, especially quiet bedrooms at night. As a result, researchers struggled to identify a clear source. Despite many investigations, the mystery remained unsolved for years.

What Researchers Discovered

Researchers from Germany and Norway decided to study the people instead of searching the environment. They examined 28 volunteers who said they regularly heard the mysterious hum. The team published its findings in the journal PLOS One.
First, researchers tested whether participants had greater sensitivity to very low-frequency sounds. They also looked for cochlear emissions. These are faint sounds that the inner ear naturally produces. Most people never notice them. However, some individuals may hear them more clearly.

Link to Low-Frequency Tinnitus

The findings suggest that many cases of the global hum may actually be a rare form of low-frequency tinnitus. Tinnitus causes phantom sounds, including buzzing, humming, clicking, or hissing, without any outside source. According to health experts, it affects millions of people worldwide.
Although the study does not explain every reported case, it offers a strong scientific explanation for many experiences. Therefore, future research may help experts better understand this unusual condition. In addition, the findings could improve diagnosis and treatment for people who continue hearing the unexplained hum.
