Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to Lake America in US
Google Maps now shows Article: Google Maps Lake America for users in the United States. The change follows President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming Lake Ontario. Google confirmed that its Maps service reflects official U.S. government naming sources. The Geographic Names Information System now lists the lake under its new U.S. name. However, the change does not apply globally. Users in Canada will continue seeing Lake Ontario on Google Maps.
People outside the United States and Canada will see both names. Google says this approach reflects different official naming conventions.
Canada Rejects the New Name
Trump announced the name change on Thursday. The decision has added another point of tension between the United States and Canada.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the new name. Ontario Premier Doug Ford also criticized the decision. Ford unveiled a lakeside sign reading “Lake Ontario: Now and Always.” The sign displays the name in both English and French. “President Trump can call it whatever he wants,” Ford said. He added that the rest of the world would continue using Lake Ontario. Some U.S. politicians have also rejected the change. New York Governor Kathy Hochul said New York would not use the new name.
Vermont Governor Phil Scott described the decision as disappointing. The lake borders both the United States and Canada.
Google Made A Similar Change Last Year
It updated the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” for U.S. users after another Trump executive order. The latest Google Maps update shows how government naming decisions can affect digital services. Different regions can now display different names for the same geographic location. For travelers and map users, the lake’s displayed name will therefore depend on their location. Canadian users will still see the traditional Lake Ontario name.
