Greek Fighter Jet Emergency Landing Sparks Runway Fire
A Greek fighter jet emergency occurred on Thursday afternoon when a military aircraft developed a technical fault during a training flight. The aircraft landed at approximately 13:45 local time. The Hellenic Air Force confirmed that the pilot escaped unharmed and is in good health.
Greek media reported that the aircraft received an onboard fire warning shortly before landing. Moments after touching down, the fighter jet caught fire on the runway. Firefighters and airport personnel responded immediately and quickly brought the blaze under control.
The Incident
The aircraft reportedly landed without deploying its landing gear, causing it to slide several dozen metres along the runway. Kathimerini first reported this detail, although the Hellenic Air Force has not officially confirmed it.
Videos shared on social media showed the jet engulfed in flames while emergency crews worked to extinguish the fire. The aircraft belonged to the 335 Squadron of the 116th Combat Wing, based at Araxos Air Base in western Greece.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the cause of the technical failure. Engineers will inspect the aircraft thoroughly, focusing on the reported fire warning.
The pilot’s calm response prevented a far more serious incident. Landing without landing gear requires exceptional skill, and the successful emergency landing highlighted the pilot’s professionalism.
Witnesses reported seeing smoke rising from the aircraft after it stopped. The runway also sustained damage and will undergo repairs before normal operations resume. Meanwhile, activities of the 335 Squadron have been temporarily suspended.
