Reflecting Pool Felony Charge Sparks National Debate
A Reflecting Pool felony charge has sparked widespread debate across the United States. Steve Hearn, a three-time Olympic canoeist, faces a felony accusation after allegedly damaging the recently renovated Reflecting Pool. His next court appearance is scheduled for 5 August.
The Allegation
Prosecutors allege that Hearn reached into the Reflecting Pool last month and damaged newly applied sealant, causing approximately $1,000 in damage. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro accused Hearn of deliberately removing part of the protective material. President Donald Trump also blamed vandals for the damage. However, Hearn told the BBC that the sealant had already “delaminated” before his visit. He said he merely touched the loose material before being detained.
The Defence
Norm Eisen, one of Hearn’s lawyers, criticised the felony charge outside the courtroom.
“If Mr Hearn can be charged with a felony for touching the Reflecting Pool, every American is at risk. It is not a crime to touch the Reflecting Pool or its water in the United States of America.”
Hearn’s legal team argues that the case has been greatly exaggerated, while prosecutors maintain that his actions were intentional.
Public Reaction
The case has attracted nationwide attention, with many questioning whether the felony charge is proportionate to the alleged damage. Supporters describe Hearn as a respected Olympian and believe the prosecution has overreached. The outcome of the case could set an important legal precedent when proceedings continue in August.
