HIV Care Action Ordered After 16 Children Diagnosed at Karachi Hospital

Sindh Provincial Ombudsman Mohammad Sohail Rajput has ordered urgent action after 16 more children received HIV/AIDS diagnoses at Kulsum Bai Valika Hospital in Karachi. The move follows concerns from families about medicines, treatment costs and hospital support. The directives seek faster care, stronger oversight, and better family support.

Parents told officials that essential medicines were sometimes unavailable. They also reported delayed reimbursements and limited cooperation from hospital staff. Rajput heard these concerns during a meeting with senior officials, hospital administrators and affected families.

Urgent Medical Support

Rajput criticised the hospital’s performance and ordered immediate steps to improve services. He asked authorities to consider deputing doctors from Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital for six months.

He also directed officials to maintain uninterrupted supplies of medicines, nutritional supplements and other essential items. These measures aim to support children and reduce pressure on their families.

Audit and Better Management

The ombudsman ordered authorities to identify a reputable audit firm within two weeks. The firm will review the hospital’s financial and administrative affairs.

In addition, Rajput called for qualified medical and administrative professionals where needed. He said stronger management could improve healthcare delivery and patient support.

He also directed the director general of labour to help reinstate workers who lost jobs while caring for affected children. Furthermore, he ordered compensation for families who lost children.

Counselling and Public Awareness

Rajput called for comprehensive rehabilitation services for children living with HIV/AIDS. He also ordered the appointment of qualified psychologists to provide counselling and psychosocial support.

The ombudsman further directed authorities to launch a public awareness campaign. The campaign will use print, electronic and social media. It will cover diagnosis, treatment, prevention and the importance of timely medical care.

The hearing was adjourned for two weeks. Meanwhile, authorities must address the concerns and submit a progress report
