Starlink Pakistan Launch Nears as Satellite Internet Rules Move Forward
The Starlink Pakistan launch appears closer as new satellite internet rules move toward government approval. Pakistan wants satellite broadband to improve access in remote and underserved areas.
The government has prepared draft regulations for satellite communications. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has also developed a licensing framework for fixed satellite services. These measures could allow several global satellite operators to enter Pakistan. Companies have already shown interest in providing satellite broadband services across the country. Pakistan granted Starlink provisional registration in March 2025. The registration allowed the company to plan ground infrastructure and complete regulatory requirements. The Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board has also received interest from other satellite companies. OneWeb, Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology, and Satellite have approached the regulator.
Satellite Broadband Could Expand Access
Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja described satellite broadband as an important part of Pakistan’s digital strategy. She said the proposed rules aim to follow international practices. The framework also seeks to create a transparent environment for investors. As a result, satellite operators could gain clearer requirements for entering the local market. Amazon’s Project Kuiper has separately expressed plans to launch satellite broadband services in Pakistan. The company expects to begin services by the end of 2026. Project Kuiper also plans ground infrastructure, including gateways and points of presence. Such investments could improve connectivity while creating new opportunities for Pakistan’s technology sector.
Multiple satellite providers could increase broadband capacity across Pakistan. This could particularly benefit communities that lack reliable traditional internet connections. However, commercial launches still depend on regulatory approvals and licensing requirements. Therefore, Starlink’s market entry does not yet have a confirmed consumer launch date. The upcoming regulations could mark an important step for Pakistan’s internet industry. They may also encourage more international companies to invest in the country’s digital infrastructure
