HMeta Layoffs 2026: More Than 2,000 Jobs Cut at Menlo Park Headquarters Amid AI Push
Meta has expanded its latest round of job cuts, with new records showing that more than 2,000 employees at its Menlo Park headquarters will lose their jobs. The layoffs are part of a broader workforce reduction announced earlier this month. Overall, the company plans to cut about 10% of its workforce, affecting roughly 8,000 employees worldwide.
New WARN filings reveal that 2,212 workers at Meta’s headquarters in Menlo Park are impacted. In addition, 313 employees at the Sunnyvale office and 74 workers at the Playa Vista office in Los Angeles County will also be affected.
AI Strategy Drives Workforce Changes
Many of the affected employees work in engineering roles. Several teams connected to Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are facing significant reductions. The cuts also include employees working on business-focused artificial intelligence products. These tools include services linked to advertising and AI-powered business solutions. Meanwhile, Meta continues to reduce staff within its Reality Labs division. The unit develops virtual reality products and wearable technology. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to resize the division due to slow growth in the VR market.
Employees received notification of the layoffs on May 20. According to company filings, their employment will officially end on July 22.
Meta said affected workers will receive severance packages. These include 16 weeks of base pay plus two additional weeks for every year of service.
Zuckerberg Focuses on AI Future
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently told employees that the company is repositioning itself for the next phase of artificial intelligence development.
In an internal memo, Zuckerberg said Meta wants to build advanced AI technologies and bring what he described as “superintelligence” to consumers. He also acknowledged that the company has not always communicated workforce changes effectively.
This latest reduction marks Meta’s third major round of layoffs in 2026. More than 1,000 jobs were eliminated in January, followed by approximately 700 additional cuts in March.
Despite the workforce reductions, Zuckerberg expressed confidence in the company’s future. However, he noted that success is not guaranteed as competition in artificial intelligence continues to intensify. As the technology industry evolves, Meta appears determined to prioritize AI investments while reshaping its workforce to support those goals.
