How Social Media Affects Employee Motivation

A new study from Rutgers University reveals how social media content impacts employee emotions and motivation. The research advises employers to consider setting limits on social media use during work hours. The goal is to protect focus and maintain positive workplace energy.
Researchers from the Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations conducted a two-part survey to explore this connection. They examined how different types of content shape mood, confidence, and work performance.
According to lead author Professor Rebecca Greenbaum, “Some content can make you feel good and help you lean into your work.”

Positive and Negative Effects of Content

The study found that content showcasing attractive, family, or accomplished individuals increased self-assurance. As a result, employees felt more confident and productive in their work goals.
However, not all content had the same effect. Political posts and rage-bait content triggered anxiety and emotional withdrawal. Greenbaum explained that such content can distract workers. “If you see something political or upsetting, it might affect how you interact with colleagues later,” she said.
Mixed results
Interestingly, “accomplished” content had mixed results. While it boosted confidence, it also increased anxiety, leading some to withdraw from workplace interactions.
Overall, the findings show that social media content has a powerful emotional influence. Therefore, employers may want to promote healthy media habits to maintain employee motivation and well-being.
