James Webb Reveals Lava Exoplanet Atmosphere 41 Light-Years Away

Scientists used NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to study a lava exoplanet atmosphere around 55 Cancrie. The rocky world lies about 41 light-years from Earth. It orbits its star in less than one day.

A Super-Hot World With Molten Rock

Researchers believe the planet’s surface stays hot enough to melt rock. Therefore, much of the world may remain covered with lava. The planet is almost twice Earth’s size and about eight times more massive. Scientists observed five eclipses using the James Webb Space Telescope. Next, they compared the data with existing planetary models. Their results suggest the atmosphere contains large amounts of carbon monoxide. It also includes smaller amounts of carbon dioxide and abundant hydrogen. Furthermore, researchers noticed changes between the observations. These differences may result from volcanic outgassing or temporary clouds. Those clouds could briefly cool the surface before new volcanic activity clears them away.

New Clues About Alien Worlds

The atmosphere also reveals important details about the planet’s interior. Scientists believe hydrogen dominates its chemical composition. Consequently, the planet likely contains a reduced magma ocean beneath its surface. Unlike Jupiter’s moon Io, this planet does not rely on tidal heating. Instead, its nearby star provides extreme heat. As a result, the star-facing side remains covered with molten rock. Moreover, 55 Cancrie belongs to a growing group of lava exoplanets. Similar worlds include K2-141 b, L 98-59 d, TOI-561 b, HD 63433 d, and CoRoT-7 b. Each orbits extremely close to its host star and experiences intense temperatures. Finally, these discoveries help scientists understand how rocky planets evolve. Future observations with James Webb may uncover even more about these hostile worlds. Every new finding brings researchers closer to understanding planets beyond our solar system.
