Japan 6G Technology Achieves 100 Gbps Wireless Milestone

Japan 6G Technology has reached a major milestone after leading telecom companies successfully tested ultra-fast wireless data transmission. The achievement could shape the future of mobile communication and next-generation internet services. A consortium including NTT DOCOMO, NTT Corporation, NEC Corporation, and Fujitsu developed the new wireless system. The team achieved transmission speeds of up to 100 Gbps over distances of approximately 100 meters. As a result, the test demonstrated the potential of future 6G networks.

Faster Networks Could Transform Digital Services

The researchers used the 100 GHz and 300 GHz frequency bands during the trials. Unlike current 5G networks, future 6G systems will rely on sub-terahertz frequencies to deliver much higher speeds and lower latency. At 100 Gbps, users could download large 4K or 8K files within seconds. Furthermore, cloud gaming, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality applications could become faster and more responsive. These improvements may also strengthen smart cities, connected industries, and autonomous transportation.

New Hardware Will Drive the 6G Era

Higher frequencies offer greater performance. However, they also require completely new wireless hardware and network infrastructure. Therefore, engineers must design advanced systems capable of maintaining stable connections at these frequencies.
The participating companies have worked on this technology since 2021. NTT DOCOMO focused on 100 GHz wireless systems, while NTT developed advanced 300 GHz transmission technology. Together, their research achieved reliable 100 Gbps wireless communication across practical distances.
Although 5G deployment continues worldwide, countries have already started preparing for the next generation of connectivity. Japan’s latest breakthrough highlights the rapid progress toward commercial 6G networks. As research continues, future wireless technology could transform communication, healthcare, manufacturing, transportation, and artificial intelligence on a global scale.
