Lahore Heart Surgery Inquiry: Doctor Accused of Taking Rs1 Million for Free Procedure

The ‘Lahore Surgery Inquiry’ has begun after serious allegations emerged against a government hospital heart surgeon. Authorities claim the doctor charged more than Rs1 million for a procedure that patients should have received free of cost.
According to reports, the patient’s family transferred the money directly to the doctor’s personal bank account. As a result, the case has sparked public concern and renewed debate about accountability in public healthcare.

Allegations Trigger Official Response

The Punjab Health Department acted soon after the allegations surfaced. Officials launched disciplinary proceedings and ordered a formal review of the case.
In addition, the Specialized Healthcare Department initiated a separate inquiry. Authorities have asked the accused individuals to submit their responses within seven days.
Officials say the inquiry officer will complete the investigation within 60 days. Therefore, the findings could determine whether disciplinary action is required.

Claims Against Hospital Staff

Reports also include allegations against a ward employee. The employee allegedly demanded Rs10,000 to place the patient’s name on the surgery waiting list.
Furthermore, the family claimed they faced pressure during the process. These accusations have increased public attention on how patients access treatment in government hospitals.
Healthcare observers say transparency remains essential for building trust. For example, clear procedures can help reduce opportunities for misconduct and improve patient confidence.

Medical Accountability Under Spotlight

The latest controversy comes at a time when medical accountability is receiving greater attention across Pakistan. Recently, another healthcare negligence case in Faisalabad also attracted widespread discussion.
As a result, many citizens are calling for stronger oversight and improved patient protection measures. Public confidence often depends on fair investigations and transparent outcomes.
Officials have emphasized that the allegations remain under investigation. However, the ongoing Lahore Surgery Inquiry aims to establish the facts and determine whether any rules were violated.
For now, authorities continue collecting evidence and reviewing statements from all parties involved. Consequently, the inquiry’s findings may influence future accountability measures within the healthcare system.
