Law Society Warns Solicitors Over LinkedIn AI Content
Solicitors must stay alert when posting on social media. The Law Society of England and Wales has warned that comments made online could breach professional rules. These include codes on client care, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and publicity.
The reminder comes as LinkedIn AI content use expands. LinkedIn, one of the world’s largest professional platforms, recently updated its data use policies. The platform confirmed it will now use and share member content to train its generative AI models.
LinkedIn’s AI Update Raises New Ethical Concerns
In an update last month, LinkedIn stated it would “use and share member data and content to train generative AI models that create content.” This includes helping users write profile updates, posts, and messages. However, LinkedIn clarified that it will not access private messages.
For example, its GenAI tools may use public profile details and posts to generate suggestions. The company added that this process aims to make it easier for recruiters and professionals to connect.
Solicitors Urged to Use Caution Online
The Law Society urged legal professionals to consider their ethical duties before posting or commenting. Even a casual remark could unintentionally reveal confidential information. Therefore, solicitors should review their privacy settings and be aware of what LinkedIn can access.
In addition, users have the option to opt out. This feature, available in account settings, also controls whether Microsoft LinkedIn’s parent company can use data for its own AI training.
As AI becomes more integrated into professional tools, awareness and caution are essential.
