OpenAI’s Bold Move into AI-Driven Social Video
OpenAI just introduced Sora, its new social video app that mixes AI creation with social sharing. It aims to rival TikTok and Instagram Reels. The app features the powerful AI model Sora 2.
With Sora, users generate short video clips—no uploading from their camera roll. Clips last around 10 seconds.
A standout tool is Cameos. It lets users upload video and audio once, verify their likeness, then allow others (if permitted) to use it in AI creations. Users can revoke access.
You also get a “Remix” feature. It encourages creativity by letting people build on others’ clips. The feed is vertical and scrollable. You can like, comment, and interact just like on other short-video apps.
OpenAI includes safety limits. Public figures can show up only if they upload their own “cameo.” Explicit or harmful content is blocked. Parental controls and options to limit personalization are part of the mix.
Availability & What’s Next
Right now, Sora is invite-only and only on iOS in the US and Canada.
OpenAI says monetisation may come via paid extras (e.g. more video generations during high demand).
They also plan to expand: more regions, possibly Android, maybe a Pro version, and deeper creator and API tools.
Why It Matters
Sora is more than another app. It signals a shift: content generated by AI rather than purely by human video recording. It forces us to rethink creativity, identity, ownership, and safety.
People will watch closely: Will AI-only content feel authentic? Will creators feel empowered or sidelined? As the app rolls out, these questions may define its success.
