Pakistan Maritime Reforms Complete 84 of 99 Action Points

Pakistan maritime reforms have achieved another major milestone. The government has completed 84 of the 99 action points under the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Reforms. Officials shared the progress during a joint press conference in Islamabad.
They said the reforms aim to modernise ports, improve shipping services and strengthen the country’s maritime economy. In addition, the government wants to attract local and foreign investment. These efforts also support Pakistan’s goal of becoming a regional trade and transshipment hub.

Ports and Shipbuilding Show Strong Progress

Task Force Co-Chair Iftikhar Ahmad said Pakistan’s ports have improved their global rankings. Karachi Port climbed from 99th to 69th place. Meanwhile, Port Qasim moved up by 18 places. He said these improvements reflect better efficiency and stronger competitiveness. Furthermore, the government removed sales tax on shipbuilding materials in the current federal budget.
This step will encourage investment and support domestic shipbuilding. Ahmad also highlighted progress in the shipbreaking and fisheries sectors. As a result, these industries are expected to create more jobs and contribute to economic growth. He added that the reforms are improving Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure and making the sector more attractive for investors.

Shipping Policy and Customs Reforms Advance

Secretary Maritime Affairs Nadeem Mahbub said the government remains committed to turning Pakistan into a regional transhipment hub. Karachi Port handled 55.8 million tonnes of cargo during the past year. Likewise, Port Qasim processed 47 million tonnes. He also announced that the Pakistan Shipping Policy 2026 is ready and will go before the federal cabinet later this month. In addition, the government has prepared a dedicated transhipment policy for local and international shipping companies.
An FBR official said the faceless customs assessment system has increased revenue by speeding up customs procedures. Moreover, authorities introduced a modern cargo management system to improve cargo movement from ports to inland destinations. Therefore, Pakistan maritime reforms continue to strengthen trade, improve logistics and build investor confidence.
