Partial Solar Eclipse: Where to Watch It Safely

The partial solar eclipse will create a striking sky show across parts of the UK. Experts are helping people watch the event safely from several locations. In Devon and Cornwall, the eclipse will begin around 18:18 BST. It will reach its peak at about 19:15 before ending near 20:10.
The Channel Islands will see similar timings. Guernsey and Jersey expect the eclipse between roughly 18:21 and 20:10.

Best Places to Watch

The Isles of Scilly will host a free viewing event at the Karma Hotel. The Cosmos Community Observatory will provide filtered telescopes and eclipse glasses.
Cornwall will also offer a viewing event at Carnewas near Newquay. Kernow Astronomers have prepared hundreds of eclipse glasses for visitors.
Meanwhile, Plymouth Astronomical Society will help viewers near Yelverton. The group plans to provide telescopes and eclipse glasses at Lowery Cross. The Norman Lockyer Observatory in Sidmouth will host a ticketed event. Visitors can watch the eclipse before viewing the Perseids meteor shower later.
The Poltimore Inn near North Molton will also welcome stargazers. Its observatory offers another location for watching the evening sky.
In Guernsey, astronomy experts recommend the island’s west coast. Jersey Astronomy Club will set up solar telescopes at Le Braye. However, viewers must protect their eyes throughout the event. Looking directly at the Sun can cause permanent retinal damage.
Use Certified Eclipse Glasses For Direct Viewing.
Never combine eclipse glasses with binoculars or telescopes.
People can also project the Sun onto white card. This method avoids looking directly at sunlight through optical equipment. Therefore, viewers should check equipment before the eclipse begins. Clear western views can also improve the experience. With several events available, stargazers have plenty of viewing choices. Safe preparation will help everyone enjoy this rare celestial spectacle.
