Punjab Education Minister Leads by Example, Enrolls Son in Government School
Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has made a bold statement for public education. He recently enrolled his son in a government school in Kasur, alongside the children of teachers and staff. The move reflects his commitment to improving Punjab education reforms from within.
Hayat shared the decision on social media, calling it a step toward equality in education. The post quickly went viral, earning praise from citizens and educators. “I am proud that my son studies alongside the children of our Naib Qasids and teachers,” he wrote.
Commitment to Public Education
This symbolic gesture aligns with the government’s larger education reform agenda. The Punjab government has allocated Rs661 billion for education this fiscal year. This amount represents 24.4% of total non-development spending, plus Rs148 billion for new projects.
However, Hayat’s efforts go beyond budget numbers. Earlier, his inspection squad exposed serious issues in school records. Investigations uncovered 1.8 million ‘ghost students’, which had inflated enrollment data and cost the province around Rs50 billion annually.
As a result, disciplinary action followed against those responsible. The minister also launched reforms to provide Rs10 billion worth of missing facilities within 90 days. These include clean water, electricity, and classroom repairs — essentials that many schools lacked for years.
Education experts say Punjab’s challenges were never about money but management. They stress that accountability, transparency, and leadership like Hayat’s are crucial for sustainable change.
With this move, the minister has turned his message into action — proving that reform starts at home.
