Punjab Hospitals Ordered to Strengthen Fire Safety After PIMS Blaze
Punjab hospitals and relevant authorities have been directed to strengthen fire safety measures. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has also ordered a fresh safety audit across healthcare facilities.
The directives follow a deadly fire at Islamabad’s Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). The incident killed 14 infants at the Mother and Child Hospital on Wednesday.
The fire started on the ward’s third floor. Preliminary information suggests an air conditioner spark may have caused the blaze.
Witnesses reported delays in emergency assistance and locked doors. Some people also broke windows while trying to reach the neonatal intensive care unit. However, authorities have disputed these claims.
PHC Issues Urgent Directives
The Punjab Healthcare Commission (PHC) has ordered immediate fire safety measures. The instructions cover both public and private hospitals across Punjab.
Hospital administrations must maintain working emergency equipment and sufficient resources. They must also ensure trained staff are available during emergencies.
In addition, hospitals must conduct regular emergency drills. These exercises can help staff respond quickly during fires and other emergencies.
The PHC also stressed compliance with Minimum Service Delivery Standards. Hospitals must follow relevant Facility Management System and Hospital Infection Control requirements.
Fire Safety Checks Ordered
Hospitals must establish emergency codes, including Code Red for fires. They must keep firefighting equipment functional and train staff regularly.
Furthermore, hospitals need clear emergency exit maps and valid building safety certificates. They must also develop standard operating procedures for emergencies.
The Punjab Emergency Services Department has been asked to inspect hospitals. Officials will use the Punjab Community Safety Act, 2021, and related building regulations.
Authorities have also been told to complete fire safety audits without delay. Non-compliant hospitals should receive inspection reports with recommendations for improvement.
Maryam Orders Fresh Audit
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari said Maryam ordered a fresh safety audit. She announced the directive through a post on X on Wednesday evening.
The chief minister reportedly gave officials 24 hours to complete the audit. She also requested a report on fire safety arrangements across provincial hospitals.
Meanwhile, emergency authorities must provide inspection details from the past three years. They must also identify hospitals that failed to meet legal safety requirements.
The latest measures aim to improve emergency preparedness and protect vulnerable patients. Regular inspections, staff training and functioning equipment can help prevent future tragedies.
