Punjab Insurance Reform Begins With Launch of New General Insurance Company
Punjab insurance reform has moved forward with the launch of a new general insurance company. Officials call it an “insurance revolution” in the province. The government aims to modernize insurance services and expand coverage for citizens. As a result, Punjab becomes the first province in Pakistan to take this step.
New Insurance System Introduced
In Punjab, officials approved the creation of two major insurance companies. One company will handle life insurance, while the other will manage general insurance. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired the meeting and reviewed progress.
Officials reported strong progress on the Punjab Life Insurance Company. The company secured fast registration from the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan. In addition, it hired professionals and started operations quickly.
The life insurance company will provide inclusive coverage. For example, it will offer health insurance, pension plans, and disaster protection. It will also include Shariah-compliant takaful services. Moreover, it will serve women, farmers, students, overseas Pakistanis, and low-income families.
General Insurance Expansion Plan
The government also launched the Punjab General Insurance Company. This company will cover non-life insurance needs of government departments. Therefore, it will improve risk management in the public sector.
Authorities sent the proposal to the provincial cabinet for approval. Once approved, the company will begin full operations. In addition, a governing board will supervise its performance.
The board will include senior officials such as the Planning and Development chairman and finance secretary. It will also include the president of the Bank of Punjab. Moreover, both companies will operate under a shared CEO for better coordination.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif emphasized faster reforms. She said Punjab aims to align with global insurance standards. In addition, she directed officials to include private sector participation and improve healthcare access.
As a result, the province expects stronger financial protection and better public services for citizens.
