Lahore U-Turn Traffic Plan Faces Backlash Over Congestion and Accidents
Lahore U-turn traffic issues continue to frustrate daily commuters across the city. Authorities replaced many traffic signals with U-turns to create signal-free corridors. However, drivers now face longer travel times and rising safety risks. As a result, many residents question the effectiveness of this plan.
U-Turn Strategy Under Pressure
In Lahore, officials removed more than 130 traffic signals over two decades. They introduced U-turns to improve traffic flow and road aesthetics. This strategy began during the era of Pervez Musharraf.
The plan also included flyovers, underpasses, and wider roads. However, the number of vehicles has increased rapidly. Therefore, road space now feels limited and congested.
Major routes such as Canal Road, Jail Road, and Ferozepur Road face frequent traffic jams. Narrow U-turns slow vehicles and create bottlenecks. In addition, single-lane turns make it harder for traffic to move smoothly.
Drivers often wait longer at U-turns than at signals. Consequently, congestion builds quickly during rush hours. Air pollution also rises as vehicles idle for longer periods.
Residents Demand Better Planning
Residents across Lahore have raised serious concerns about safety and delays. Many say short trips now take much longer. For example, commuters near Canal Road report daily frustration.
Urban planner Mian Sohail Hanif Bhandara criticized the design of these U-turns. He said planners ignored road width and traffic needs. As a result, accidents and congestion have increased.
Meanwhile, the Lahore Development Authority acknowledged some flaws. Officials admitted that several U-turns have small turning spaces. They also noted that traffic checkpoints worsen congestion.
Authorities plan to widen roads and improve designs. However, residents want quicker action. They believe better planning will improve safety and reduce daily stress on the roads.
