Punjab Learning Targets: New Academic Goals Set for Primary Schools
The Punjab learning targets for the 2026-27 academic year aim to improve the performance of primary school students across the province. The School Education Department has introduced new learning outcome targets for Urdu, English, and Mathematics for students from Grades I to V. Therefore, every government school will now follow specific academic goals to strengthen classroom learning and improve student achievement.
School-wise targets to strengthen learning
The department has prepared separate learning targets for every school. In addition, it has introduced gender-disaggregated targets for boys and girls. This approach will help education officials measure progress more accurately and identify learning gaps at an early stage.
The School Education Department has directed all Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) to share the school-wise targets with Assistant Education Officers (AEOs) and head teachers without delay. As a result, schools can begin implementing the new academic framework before the start of the academic year. Officials expect the initiative to improve teaching quality and student outcomes across Punjab.
The department has also instructed AEOs to review progress during their monthly monitoring visits. Furthermore, district review meetings will now include learning outcomes and target implementation as a regular agenda item. This process will help authorities track progress and address challenges more effectively.
World Bank-backed project supports reforms
The new targets form part of the ongoing GRADES project, which the Punjab government is implementing with support from the World Bank. The project focuses on improving foundational learning in government schools. In addition, it aims to strengthen teaching practices and create better learning opportunities for young students.
Education officials believe clear learning targets will help teachers focus on measurable outcomes. They also expect regular monitoring to improve accountability and classroom performance. Moreover, gender-based data will enable the department to design targeted interventions where needed.
The School Education Department has directed all CEOs to ensure the effective implementation of the new policy. Officials believe the Punjab learning targets will strengthen primary education, improve learning outcomes in core subjects, and promote quality education for every child across the province.
