Rare Great White Shark Filmed in Mediterranean Sea
A diver has captured rare footage of a Great White shark. The encounter happened in the Mediterranean Sea in May. Volunteer diver Derk Remmers described the moment as “pretty special”.“The shark was pretty close to us,” he told the BBC. “My fingers were trembling when I was trying to get the camera operating.”
A Near-Extinct Species
Scientists believe overfishing has driven this species to near extinction in the Mediterranean. Therefore, sightings are extremely uncommon. The shark was spotted many miles offshore between Tunisia and Sicily. It is believed to be an adult male.
Hope for Conservation
Conservationists say people should not be concerned. The shark was far from the beaches. However, they hope the sighting may encourage governments to create marine protected areas in Mediterranean waters. As a result, vulnerable species could recover.
