Sindh dengue data excludes private lab cases, says Health Minister Azra Pechuho
Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Pechuho clarified that official Sindh dengue data only covers cases from government hospitals. She said the health department keeps a complete record of all patients admitted or treated in outpatient departments.
However, a major gap exists between official numbers and private hospital figures. The Sindh health department’s latest report shows 1,083 confirmed dengue cases in 2025. In contrast, private hospitals, including Indus Hospital, Liaquat National, and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, reported more than 4,000 cases in Karachi alone. Hyderabad is also witnessing a sharp increase, with several suspected deaths. Yet, the government has officially confirmed only two deaths — one in Karachi and one in Hyderabad.
Govt defends official figures
Dr. Pechuho addressed public criticism, explaining that “if a patient gets tested at a private lab, those results are not included in official records.” She emphasized that the government’s data is verified and accurate.
The minister urged citizens not to believe unverified information spreading on social media. “We maintain accurate hospital data,” she added.
Dengue control measures intensified
According to the report, 439 new dengue cases have been recorded in October alone. Karachi remains the most affected division with 188 cases, followed by Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas.
Dr. Pechuho said anti-dengue campaigns have been strengthened. Fumigation, drainage cleaning, and mosquito-control drives are in progress across Sindh. District officials have been directed to remove stagnant water promptly. She added that both urban and rural areas are receiving equal attention, with free testing and treatment available in all government hospitals.
