Spoken English Training Program to Benefit 35,000 Government School Teachers
The School Education Department (SED) has decided to launch a Spoken English Training program for 35,000 government school teachers. The initiative aims to improve teachers’ spoken and written English skills and strengthen their classroom performance. As a result, students may receive better guidance and more effective language instruction in schools.
The department will conduct the program in collaboration with Berlitz and the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC). Officials believe the initiative will help teachers meet international language standards and improve their professional capabilities.
Teachers to Undergo Language Assessment
Before the training begins, participants will complete an assessment to measure their existing English proficiency. In addition, the department has made a Google Form assessment mandatory for enrollment. Officials say this step will help trainers understand the learning needs of each participant.
The department will hold training sessions at designated District PECTAA head offices and selected schools. Teachers will attend classes twice a week, while each session will last two hours and 15 minutes. Therefore, participants will receive regular practice and continuous support throughout the program.
Officials have also made attendance compulsory for all selected teachers. According to the department, teachers must maintain 100 percent attendance to successfully complete the program and achieve its objectives.
Initiative Expected to Improve Learning Outcomes
The SED designed the program to strengthen teachers’ communication skills and improve classroom instruction. Teachers with stronger English skills can explain concepts more clearly and engage students more effectively. Consequently, students may develop better language abilities and gain greater confidence in learning English.
Education experts have welcomed the initiative and described it as a positive step for public education. They believe stronger English language instruction can improve academic performance and open more opportunities for students in the future.
Moreover, experts say the program can help reduce learning gaps and enhance teaching quality in government schools. Improved teacher training often leads to better classroom outcomes and stronger student engagement.
Through the Spoken English Training program, the School Education Department aims to equip teachers with practical language skills and contribute to higher educational standards across government schools.
