UK Social Media Ban: Full List of Platforms Affected by Starmer’s Under-16 Rules
The UK government has announced a major change for young internet users. Under the new UK Social Ban, children under 16 will no longer be allowed to access several major social media platforms. Which Platforms Are Included?
The ban will apply to several of the world’s largest social media services. These include TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat, and X. Young users under 16 will not be able to create or maintain accounts on these platforms once the rules take effect. In addition, other platforms may also face restrictions. Reports suggest that Threads, Twitch, Reddit, Bluesky, Kick, and Lemon8 could fall within the scope of the new measures. Regulators will continue reviewing platforms as technology evolves.
What Is Not Included?
Messaging services will remain available. Apps such as WhatsApp and Signal are not part of the social media ban because they function primarily as communication tools rather than social networks. YouTube Kids is also expected to remain accessible. Furthermore, the government plans additional protections for teenagers under 18. These may include limits on livestreaming, contact with strangers, and certain AI chatbot services. Officials believe these measures will create a safer online environment. The policy has received strong support from many parents. However, some technology companies argue that a blanket ban could push young users toward less regulated online spaces. Despite the debate, the government intends to move forward with the new rules next year.
