Universities Urged to Reimagine Higher Education in the AI Era

Global university leaders gathered in Seoul, South Korea, to discuss how AI in higher education is reshaping the future of learning. Speaking via video, Ted Mitchell, president of the American Council on Education, reminded leaders to stay true to core values such as independence, inclusion, and academic excellence.

Rethinking Education in a Changing World

At the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) conference, speakers warned that higher education faces an “existential crisis.” Institutions must adapt quickly to political, economic, and technological shifts.
Eunjoo Lee, president of Seoul Cyber University, said universities must move beyond traditional teaching models. “We face declining job stability, falling public trust, and new demands for global talent,” she noted. Her university already integrates AI across disciplines, preparing students for a rapidly changing world.

Urgency and Innovation

Speakers like Arturo Cherbowski from Universia México stressed urgency in reforming curricula and teaching methods. He warned that without innovation, universities risk becoming obsolete in an AI-driven world.
In contrast, leaders from Kazakhstan shared optimism. Minister Sayasat Nurbek highlighted how AI courses are now mandatory in every university, with partnerships from companies like Google and Huawei supporting student innovation.

Global Collaboration Ahead

IAUP President Shawn Chen emphasized that collaboration is essential. “AI should serve equity, inclusion, and humanity,” he said. The IAUP plans regional meetings to expand support for universities worldwide.
Founded in 1964, the IAUP now includes over 600 leaders from 21 countries. Together, they aim to reimagine higher education to meet the challenges—and possibilities—of the AI era.
