Vitamin D Cancer Therapy Shows Promise Against Deadly Pancreatic Cancer
Researchers have discovered that a Vitamin D Cancer Therapy may help make pancreatic cancer easier to treat. A new clinical trial suggests that paricalcitol, a vitamin D-based drug, could weaken the protective barrier around pancreatic tumors. As a result, chemotherapy may work more effectively against one of the deadliest forms of cancer.
The study involved patients with untreated metastatic pancreatic cancer. Researchers combined paricalcitol with standard chemotherapy and monitored safety and treatment responses. The results showed encouraging signs, especially among patients whose tumors had higher vitamin D receptor levels.
How the Treatment Works
Pancreatic tumors often develop a dense tissue barrier. This barrier blocks cancer drugs and limits immune cell activity. Therefore, treatment becomes much more difficult.
Researchers found that paricalcitol reduced the activity of fibroblasts inside tumors. These cells help create the protective shield around cancer. However, the treatment did not remove fibroblasts completely.
In addition, the therapy increased the presence of T cells within tumors. These immune cells play a key role in attacking cancer. Greater T cell activity may help the body respond better to treatment.
Early Results Show Promise
The trial included 36 patients. Participants received chemotherapy with either a placebo or paricalcitol. Overall, researchers reported that the treatment remained safe and manageable.
Patients receiving paricalcitol showed stronger responses than those in the placebo group. For example, 10 of 24 patients experienced partial tumor responses. By comparison, only one of 12 placebo patients achieved a similar result.
What Comes Next
Although the trial was small, the findings are encouraging. Researchers believe larger studies should explore whether the therapy can improve survival rates.
The research also builds on earlier studies showing vitamin D receptors can regulate tumor-supporting cells. If future trials confirm these results, Vitamin D Cancer Therapy could become a valuable addition to pancreatic cancer treatment.
