Water During Meals May Increase Food Intake, Study Finds

Many people believe water during meals helps control appetite. However, a new study suggests the opposite may happen. Researchers found that frequent sips of water could encourage people to eat larger portions instead of less.

Study links frequent sips to larger portions

Researchers from Cornell University and Penn State University analyzed data from two experiments involving 86 adults. Participants ate beef chilli or chicken tikka masala with water. They could eat as much as they wanted while cameras recorded their eating and drinking habits.
The team examined sip size, drinking speed and how often participants switched between food and water. Results showed that people who drank more water also ate more food. For every extra 100 grams of water, participants consumed about 39 grams more food. That equals nearly 49 additional calories. In addition, those who alternated more often between bites and sips also finished larger meals.

Researchers explain the possible reason

Experts believe repeated sips may delay sensory-specific satiety. Normally, the taste of the same food becomes less appealing over time. Therefore, people naturally stop eating. However, water may refresh flavour perception and keep food enjoyable for longer.
Lead author Dr Paige Cunningham explained that frequent sips could restore taste and encourage continued eating. Moreover, water keeps the mouth moist and helps food move more easily. As a result, people may eat faster and consume more without noticing.

Findings need further confirmation

Researchers stressed that the study included only a small number of participants. Therefore, the findings may not apply to everyone or every meal. They also noted that water leaves the stomach quickly, so it may not create lasting fullness.
The team recommends larger studies involving different foods and eating habits. Until then, people should view these findings as early evidence rather than final proof. Maintaining balanced meals and mindful eating remains important for overall health and healthy weight management every day.
