Punjab Plans New Concept-Based Curriculum for Grades 1 to 5
Punjab is preparing a Punjab new curriculum for students in Grades 1 to 5. The plan aims to improve academic skills, creativity and practical understanding. Officials want children to understand concepts instead of simply memorising textbook content.
Focus Shifts From Rote Learning
District Education Officer Dr Hajra Shaheen said the new system will reduce reliance on rote learning. Instead, students will learn through observation, questions, analysis and problem-solving.Teachers will use classroom activities to explain important concepts. They will also adjust lessons according to students’ age, mental capacity and learning needs.
The approach will give children more chances to explore ideas through practical experiences. As a result, students can develop stronger understanding instead of simply remembering textbook material.Teachers will take a more active role during lessons. They will ask questions, seek student opinions and encourage children to reach conclusions independently.Teacher training will support the change. Educators will learn modern teaching methods and develop better skills for activity-based learning.
Simpler Lessons and Modern Skills
The revised curriculum will also reduce unnecessary academic pressure. Learning material will become shorter, simpler and more suitable for young learners.According to Dr Shaheen, officials have made progress on the revised Grades 1 to 5 curriculum. New textbooks will support the changes during the 2027-28 academic session.
She stressed the importance of strong foundations during primary education. Early learning habits can influence children’s future academic performance and educational progress.Meanwhile, Punjab plans to introduce artificial intelligence education at the primary level. The initiative could begin during the 2027-28 academic session.
The new approach aims to make government schools more engaging and practical. It could help students develop useful skills beyond the classroom.Dr Shaheen expressed hope that the changes would improve education quality. She said modern teaching methods could provide children with purposeful learning opportunities. The curriculum could also encourage curiosity and independent thinking. Therefore, students may become better prepared for future academic challenges.
