A-Level Results 2026: Top Grades Rise Across UK
Hundreds of thousands of students across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland received their A-level results on Thursday. Many students also received results for technical and vocational qualifications.
The share of top A-level grades rose slightly this year. Meanwhile, a record number of students secured university places.
A-Level and Technical Results Show Positive Trends
The percentage of A* and A grades reached 28.5% across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The figure stood at 28.3% last year.Around 40% of 18-year-olds in England take A-levels each year. This makes the results an important milestone for many young people.
England also released around 250,000 vocational and technical qualification grades. These included BTEC Nationals, Cambridge Technicals, Cambridge Advanced Nationals, and T-levels.Almost 20,000 students completed T-levels in 2026. More than 90% of students passed their courses.
T-levels began in 2020 as two-year technical courses after GCSEs. They focus on practical skills while carrying the same value as three A-levels.AS-level results were also released in Wales and Northern Ireland. These results will contribute to students’ final A-level grades next summer.
University Costs Remain a Major Concern
University costs remain a major issue for students and families. The government faces growing pressure to reform student loan repayment rules.At the same time, technical education remains a key focus for policymakers. Students now have more options beyond traditional academic routes.
Universities UK represents more than 140 vice-chancellors across the country. Its chief executive urged students to make choices based on their own goals.She also warned students against allowing politicians to influence their decisions. The advice comes as debates continue over higher education costs and funding.Scotland also recorded positive results this year. Pass rates for National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher exams rose across the board.
