Kashmir Law College Hosts National Workshop on Geographical Indications and Cultural Heritage
Srinagar, October 25 Kashmir Law College, affiliated with the University of Kashmir, hosted a three-day national workshop titled “Geographical Indications (GI) Kashmir: A Heritage of Craft and Cultivation Immersive Retreat.”
The Kashmir Law College workshop aimed to raise awareness about innovation, intellectual property (IP), and the value of protecting local heritage through Geographical Indications.
Empowering Students Through Knowledge
The event was organized by Property Pro Legal, Jodhpur, under the leadership of Mr. Sanjay Bafna, with support from Dr. Yasin Wani (University of Kashmir), Fayaz Nabi (Hotel Pashm Home, Hazratbal), Mr. Naseer Zargar (Pashm Home Art, Srinagar), and Hastin Research.
During the inaugural session, several speakers emphasized the importance of IP education for Kashmir’s youth. Chairman Altaf Bajaj inaugurated the event, noting that education remains the foundation of empowerment and sustainable growth.
Principal Dr. Saba Manzoor underlined how legal education can create socially responsible professionals. Dr. Asma Rehman highlighted that IP literacy helps innovators protect their creations within Kashmir’s rich cultural context.
Founder and Director of Property Pro Legal, Mr. Sanjay Bafna, shared his vision of promoting recognition and protection for India’s traditional crafts and products globally.
Exploring Legal and Economic Aspects of GIs
Over three days, experts and academicians led sessions on the legal, economic, and commercial aspects of Geographical Indications. They discussed how GI protection can boost Kashmir’s economy, empower artisans, and preserve traditional crafts for future generations.
The Kashmir Law College workshop concluded with a call to strengthen IP awareness and promote innovation rooted in cultural identity.
