Punjab Revises School Timings to Protect Students from Smog and Cold Weather
The Punjab government has announced new school timings to protect students from worsening smog and dropping temperatures. Provincial Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat shared the updated schedule on Sunday.
All schools will now open at 8:45 a.m. and close at 1:30 p.m. Teachers, parents, and students must follow the new routine. On Fridays, classes will end at 12:30 p.m. In double-shift schools, the first shift runs from 8:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., while the second shift operates from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Teachers will remain on duty from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and until 12:30 p.m. on Fridays. Schools will also open on alternate Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon. District CEOs may adjust timings by up to 15 minutes depending on local conditions.
Officials said the change was necessary due to rising smog levels and lower temperatures. The Education Department explained that this new winter schedule aims to reduce students’ exposure to harmful morning air. The plan will remain in effect until weather and air quality improve.
Lahore’s Air Quality Crisis
Lahore now ranks among the most polluted cities in the world. Air Quality Index (AQI) readings in some areas have crossed 400, falling in the hazardous range. Experts warn that pollution will worsen as winter deepens.
Doctors urge schools to limit outdoor activities and ensure ventilation indoors. Parents are advised to send children wearing protective masks. Environmental groups have also called for stricter pollution controls and a ban on crop burning.
For now, revised Punjab school timings remain a crucial step to protect children’s health during this smog-filled season.
