OpenAI Lawsuit: British Columbia Plans Legal Action Over ChatGPT Activity

British Columbia has announced plans to pursue an OpenAI lawsuit over the company’s handling of ChatGPT activity linked to the deadly Tumbler Ridge school shooting. Provincial officials claim OpenAI failed to alert law enforcement after identifying violent prompts on an account connected to the attacker. In addition, the province will coordinate its legal action with families already pursuing similar claims in the United States. Officials say the case seeks accountability and stronger safeguards for artificial intelligence platforms.

Province Alleges OpenAI Failed to Alert Authorities

Attorney General Niki Sharma said British Columbia has hired legal teams in both Canada and California to prepare the lawsuit. She stated that the province wants to hold OpenAI and its decision-makers accountable for not notifying police about the violent ChatGPT activity before the attack. Furthermore, she said the province would continue taking legal action when corporate decisions harm communities.
According to officials, OpenAI suspended an account linked to the attacker in June 2025. However, the company did not report the account because it found no evidence of an imminent threat under its policies at that time. Sharma acknowledged that the legal process could take time. Nevertheless, she said any financial recovery would help Tumbler Ridge rebuild and support projects such as constructing a new school.
Families affected by the tragedy have also filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in a California federal court. Their lawyers argue the company should have reported the account after detecting violent behavior. They also allege OpenAI provided guidance that allowed suspended users to regain access to its services.

OpenAI Defends Policy Changes After the Incident

OpenAI said it has strengthened its safeguards since the shooting. The company stated that ChatGPT now responds more effectively to signs of distress and follows a zero-tolerance policy against supporting violence. Earlier this year, Chief Executive Sam Altman publicly apologized to the Tumbler Ridge community for not notifying authorities after the account suspension.
OpenAI also said updated security guidelines introduced after June 2025 would require reporting similar cases to law enforcement. Meanwhile, experts say the case raises broader questions about the responsibilities of artificial intelligence companies. The OpenAI lawsuit could shape future legal standards for reporting credible threats while balancing user privacy and public safety.
