Sindh Police to Set Up Digital Forensic Lab for Criminal Investigations
Sindh forensic lab plans moved forward as Sindh Police announced the establishment of a digital forensic laboratory to strengthen criminal investigations. The initiative aims to improve the handling of electronic evidence and address the growing use of technology in criminal activities. Officials discussed the project during a review meeting at the Central Police Office in Karachi.
Police Push for Technology-Based Investigations
Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho chaired the meeting on Tuesday. He said modern crimes require advanced investigative methods instead of relying only on conventional techniques. Therefore, Sindh Police must adopt technology-driven and evidence-based practices to improve the quality of investigations.
Senior police officers attended the meeting, including the additional IGP of the Counter-Terrorism Department. DIGs from headquarters, IT, telecommunications, transport and training also participated. In addition, assistant inspectors general reviewed proposals for establishing the new laboratory.
The project director for IT briefed participants on the proposed scope of the facility. He also explained its technical requirements and operational framework. Officials discussed how the laboratory would support investigators in examining electronic devices and digital records during criminal investigations.
Digital Evidence Becoming More Important
Officials told the meeting that almost 97 percent of investigation cases now involve digital devices such as mobile phones, computers and other electronic equipment. As a result, investigators increasingly depend on digital evidence to solve crimes and support prosecutions.
The meeting also noted that nearly 90 percent of criminal cases worldwide now rely on digital evidence. Therefore, establishing a modern forensic laboratory has become essential for effective law enforcement.
The planned facility will help police analyze electronic data, strengthen evidence collection and improve the accuracy of investigations. It is also expected to enhance the capacity of investigators to deal with cybercrime and other technology-related offences. Consequently, the project marks another step toward modernizing Sindh Police and improving public safety through advanced forensic capabilities.
