University of Houston and DHR Health Launch Medical Research and Education Center in Rio Grande Valley
The University of Houston and DHR Health Hospital System have joined forces to open a new medical research and education center in the Rio Grande Valley. Backed by $15 million in state funding, the center will enhance health care access, expand research, and strengthen medical training in one of Texas’ most underserved regions.
UH brings its academic and research expertise, while DHR Health contributes its deep clinical network across South Texas. Together, they aim to improve outcomes and expand opportunities for medical students, residents, and researchers.
A Partnership for Health and Innovation
“UH is committed to building a healthier Texas,” said Renu Khator, University of Houston president. “This partnership strengthens our health workforce and ensures the Rio Grande Valley receives the innovation it deserves.”
Under the agreement, DHR Health will construct a new facility featuring joint research labs, clinical training programs, and learning spaces. The site will focus on diseases that heavily affect the region.
According to Jonathan A. McCullers, UH vice president of health affairs, this partnership will help “train physicians where they’re needed most” and establish a strong foundation for statewide medical education.
Building on Collaboration
DHR Health already operates over 70 facilities, including five hospitals, and serves as a major training hub. This collaboration builds on their 2017 UH College of Pharmacy partnership, which expanded pharmacy education and research.
“This partnership invests in a healthier South Texas,” said Susan Turley, president of DHR Health.
