University Reading Habits Need More Support From Professors

University Reading Habits have become a growing concern for many educators. Short attention spans, smartphones, and AI tools have changed how students consume information. As a result, many professors question whether students still read deeply. However, the discussion should not focus only on students. Educators must also examine how they encourage reading inside and outside the classroom.

Reading Matters Across Every Discipline

Many people associate reading with the humanities and social sciences. However, engineering and science students also need strong reading skills. They must analyze complex ideas, question assumptions, and solve open-ended problems. In addition, reading helps students develop creativity, empathy, and critical thinking.
Universities should prepare graduates for more than technical careers. They should also help students become thoughtful and responsible citizens. Although reading alone cannot build character, it strengthens communication, understanding, and ethical decision-making. Therefore, every academic discipline should promote meaningful reading.
One professor recently tested this idea in an upper-level engineering course on refugee health. Students completed academic readings before class and wrote short reflections by hand. The instructor also offered extra credit for reading one of four books about refugees and displacement. Students then discussed the books in person instead of submitting written summaries.

Creating a Culture of Reading

The results exceeded expectations. Nearly two-thirds of the class accepted the reading challenge. Every discussion explored themes, characters, and personal experiences. Students even questioned the instructor’s interpretations and recommended additional books. As a result, the conversations became thoughtful, engaging, and memorable.
Some students admitted they had not finished a book in years. Nevertheless, many wanted to read another book after completing the assignment. The experience showed that students often respond positively when professors provide encouragement and meaningful incentives.
Modern distractions continue to challenge learning. Even so, universities can strengthen University Reading Habits by creating opportunities for discussion, reflection, and curiosity. When educators actively promote reading, students become more engaged learners and more thoughtful individuals. That investment benefits both classrooms and society.
