Google Gemini Admin Controls Give IT Teams More Oversight
Google is rolling out new Gemini Admin Controls for Workspace customers. The update gives IT teams more authority over how employees use Gemini’s privacy features at work. Previously, users could start temporary chats and delete conversations without administrators having direct control. Now, Google is changing that.
New Tools Help Businesses Manage AI Conversations
Temporary chats work like an incognito mode for Gemini. They allow users to ask questions without keeping a visible conversation history. In addition, users can manually delete previous chats. These features have been useful for many employees. However, they also raised concerns for organizations that must follow strict data retention policies.
Google’s latest update gives administrators the ability to enable or disable temporary chats and conversation deletion. They can apply these settings across an entire company or target specific departments and groups. As a result, businesses gain more flexibility when managing AI tools in the workplace.
Compliance Rules Still Take Priority
Although users may delete chats from their own view, company compliance systems can still retain records. Google confirmed that retention policies in Google Vault override user deletions. Therefore, organizations can continue meeting legal, regulatory, and eDiscovery requirements even when employees remove conversations from their accounts. The company is keeping the features enabled by default. That means most users will not notice any immediate changes unless their IT department updates the settings. Google began rolling out the new controls on June 15. Policy enforcement for users is expected to begin around June 21 for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains.
The move addresses a growing challenge for businesses. As AI tools become part of daily workflows, companies want stronger governance without limiting productivity. With Gemini Admin Controls, organizations can strike a better balance between employee privacy, security, and compliance.
