YouTube Shorts Replaces Likes With Heart Reactions and Adds New Viewing Features
YouTube is rolling out several updates to Shorts, bringing a refreshed viewing experience with new reaction options, cleaner playback, and faster video controls. The latest changes are designed to give viewers more control while helping YouTube collect more meaningful feedback for its recommendation system.
Heart Reaction Replaces Like and Dislike Buttons
One of the biggest changes is the replacement of the traditional thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons with a single heart icon. Users can now tap the heart to show appreciation for a Short. If they are not interested in a video, they can open the menu and choose options such as Not Interested, Don’t Recommend This Channel, or Report. According to YouTube, these detailed feedback options provide more useful signals than the previous like-or-dislike system, helping improve future content recommendations.
Shorts Creators Will Lose New Dislike Data
The update also changes the analytics available to creators. While historical dislike counts will remain accessible inside YouTube Studio, those numbers will no longer update for Shorts after the end of June. Creators will need to rely on other engagement metrics when evaluating content performance.
Clear Screen Mode Removes On-Screen Distractions YouTube is also introducing a new Clear Screen option for Shorts. Users can activate the feature through the three-dot menu within the Shorts player. Once enabled, interface elements such as buttons and captions disappear, allowing viewers to watch videos without visual distractions. The feature brings YouTube Shorts closer to the viewing experience already available on competing short-video platforms.
